About tasks/issues¶
The purpose of this page is to explain how we aim to distribute work within the organization.
Technical¶
GitHub project¶
For project management we use
this GitHub project. Project
management is important to get an overview of what needs and is currently being
worked on to easily distribute work and make sure people don’t accidentally work
on the same thing. It’s mainly the tech lead & group leader's responsibility to
keep this updated, but it’s very helpful if each developer keeps their tasks
updated in the project. The most important fields for a developer to keep
updated are Assignees and Status.
Size estimates (or time) are traditionally used in companies to predict how much work can be accomplished in a certain time period. But since we’re not a company that’s not really as relevant to us and we use it more as a way to make it easier to pick what to work on. It’s not immediately obvious what size means, in our case it’s the size of the scope. Examples for each size:
| Size | Description |
|---|---|
| Tiny | This issue is straightforward and there’s only one way to do it, for example updating a link |
| Small | This issue is still pretty straightforward, but there is a bigger risk of making mistakes and the way to accomplish the task may be subjective. |
| Medium | This issue is more complex and requires acquiring some deeper knowledge of the system. |
| Large | This issue is complex and usually involves creating something new. It’s usually a good idea to consult someone else both for knowledge sharing and getting a new perspective |
| X-Large | This is something complex that needs to be created from scratch. It should notbe worked on alone. Code review |
Picking up a task¶
If you are not sure which task you should do you can always ask someone in the leadership, they have a good idea of what needs to get done and can help you find something that you find interesting.
If you have a task you really want to do, always make sure to move it to “In progress” on the project board. It is also a good idea to let someone in the leadership know that you want to work on this task, sometimes they have some insights that could help you with the task! Also open a draft PR so others can see what you're working on.
